Varvara Kopeina, Austria:
„The youth exchange “Cast Shadows” in Marche-en-Famenne lasted only one week, but it was so full of experiences that, in many ways, it feels like a short lifetime. New priceless knowledge, experiences, friendships, and places — all of that would be enough to fill an entire book, but for now, there will only be one short story. 🙂
Our week was devoted to exploring the often taboo topic of the prison system and the people within it. We dove deeply into the subject, looking at the situation from various perspectives through different activities and methods. One of the highlights of the project was a shared meeting with an actual prosecutor and a former inmate, who were both open to sharing their experiences and reflecting on justice — an experience everyone should have at least once in their life.
We also had a fascinating visit to the SMAJ organization, which does vital work assisting with after-prison reintegration into society and providing psychological support.
Throughout the week, we approached the topic creatively by working on our own notebooks and creating a theatrical performance. In the notebooks, we drew, made collages, and wrote thoughts and reflections on prison life. Later, we held an open exhibition for the local community. The theatrical piece combined acting and poetry that we, as a group, wrote ourselves in our own mother tongues — a truly amazing experience, as we practiced and performed in an actual theater, guided by a theater director who also organizes workshops with inmates in prisons.
As for the cultural part of the exchange, we were lucky to explore some lesser-known parts of Belgium, such as Marche-en-Famenne with its quiet, charming streets, and Liège with its mix of traditional and modern architecture and its famous fair, where we tasted Lacquement waffles and, of course, Belgian fries.
Although the group wasn’t very big, we connected immediately and had no conflicts — everyone participated actively in all the activities and helped others whenever needed. During our final reflection on the last day, everyone agreed that the group had become like a family for that one week.
Overall, this was a truly valuable and unforgettable experience!“
